Martha Speaks Reading Buddies
Since 2008, WFSU has implemented the Martha Speaks Reading Buddies project at elementary schools in Leon, Gadsden, Walton and Hamilton Counties. The program has been so popular among students and teachers that it is now being used in over 65 classrooms.
The Martha Speaks Reading Buddies program is a ten-week long program that pairs kindergarten or 1st grade students (Little Buddies) with older students, usually 4th or 5th graders (Big Buddies). Buddies visit with each other once a week to learn special new vocabulary words, utilizing a variety of activities: watch a clip of Martha Speaks, play word games, and read a book together. The buddies culminate their meeting by completing a journal entry using their new vocabulary words.
Research indicates that when children “buddy” up for learning wonderful things take place for both older and younger students!
Reading Buddies is part of the PBS Kids & WFSU Raising Readers project and has been made possible by generous funding through a grant from the Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation (2009) and the State of Florida (2011).
