Blackwood was arrested in the murder of Carolyn Thomas-Tynes, who was found strangled in her bed on Jan. 6, 1995. The two had had a long-term relationship. At trial, he was convicted and the jury recommended the death penalty 9-to-3. After the trial judge sentenced Blackwood to death, he appealed to the Florida Supreme Court.
