Owen was tried, convicted, and sentenced to death for the March 1984 murder of Karen Slattery. His sentence later was reversed due to errors at the trial. On retrial in 1999, Owen again was found guilty and sentenced to death on a jury recommendation of 10-to-2. This is his direct appeal.
