Parenting Counts
Parenting Counts
For adults that hope to gain insight into the minds of their children
host

Parenting Information You Can Trust: Parenting Counts is a family of educational materials which provide research-based information about how children think, feel, and learn and supports parents with examples of best parenting practices. The project focuses on children from birth to five years of age. WFSU is working on a grant project funded through the Talaris Institute, a Seattle-based, nonprofit organization that advances knowledge of early learning and the importance of parenting in the first years of life.

Focused on bonding, brain development and social-emotional development, Parenting Counts products help parents understand the importance of parenting in the early years. By learning how children think, feel and learn, parents are more capable of helping their children grow in healthy ways. Research tells us that the bond between a parent and child is created in the first five years. This parental bond is the foundation for all learning and the foundation for all relationships developed later in the child's life. That's why Parenting Counts!

Key partners in this project include PAEC Migrant Program, Leon County Title I program, and area childcare centers.

These sessions will provide parents with an opportunity to explore the Talaris Institute's "Parenting Counts" topics in greater detail and hear additional information from the research in child development. The 3 quarterly workshops will include video segments, discussion and activities to get parents thinking about how children learn, what causes stress and how adults can provide the caring environments that promote optimal learning. Parents will leave with greater understanding and new information to take home related to each topic.

"Communication"
Explore the topics of connecting, reading cues and supporting early language development.

"Exploring"
Learn how young children learn and how parents can provide the best environment for learning to happen.

"Stress"
Hear about the causes of stress in infants and young children and learn how best to help them cope.
