SciGirls 2008 has arrived! Do you know a SciGirl?
Get ready for SciGirls 2008!
For the third consecutive year, girls from the Tallahassee area will get together for fun and science at this unique two-week summer camp for rising 6th- to 10th-graders.
The 2008 camp, sponsored by The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and WFSU, will take place July 14-25, 2008.
Two camps will be offered this year. SciGirls I is for rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders. This camp is free. SciGirls II is for returning SciGirls campers and rising 8th, 9th and 10th graders. Cost for this camp is $300.
See application information below (how to apply).
SciGirls I
In this year's SciGirls I camp, girls will travel to a variety of area sites, engaging in hands-on activities that underscore important science principles. They will conduct an invasive species survey at Wakulla Springs, explore the Marianna Caverns, and spend a day at the Magnet Lab learning about water under the Earth’s mantle as well as water from outer space. They will also snorkel in the Gulf of Mexico to explore sea life. Each day will provide an opportunity for fun, excitement and new areas of science to explore.
SciGirls II
In this year's SciGirls II camp, girls will explore science in more depth and in ways designed to teach strategies to synthesize the experiences. From digging up bones for a forensic anthropology exercise to making models of comets from dry ice and other ingredients, campers will participate in in-depth experiences that challenge their scientific knowledge. Activities will include snorkeling in the Gulf of Mexico and learning how marine biologists conduct research to using computer programs to track invasive species.
How to Apply
Girls must complete an online application, including a letter of recommendation from a school teacher or a counselor. We are seeking a diverse group of young women who have exhibited a keen interest in science. Applications are due March 30, 2008. Applicants will be notified of their status in mid-April.
