Haiqiong Deng
at Maclay Gardens
Save the date, this outloud will premiere on WFSU Wednesday, April 30th at 7:30 pm ET.
Deng Haiqiong (Deng is the surname, Haiqiong the given) and her husband Lui Nan preserve the traditions of their homeland in Tallahassee, Florida, even as China’s education system moves away from teaching them. Haiqiong plays the zheng, or gu-zheng (gu means ancient). The zheng is a long, stringed instrument- a kind of zither - and Haiqiong is one of the world’s best players. She is an instructor of the Chinese Ensemble at the Florida State University College of Music. Haiqiong also plays a smaller zither called the gu-qin, an instrument too quiet to be played in public performance, yet very important to the traditional Chinese concept of self-cultivation. She’ll play both instruments on this episode.

outloud: Stillwood
Save the date, this outloud will premiere on 4FSU (Comcast 4) week ofApril 21st.
Stillwood has all the trappings of a jam band: music with elements of southern roots-rock and psychedelic pop, virtuoso instrumental solos leading to song lengths in excess of 7-8 minutes – and a reputation as a high-energy live band. But what they don’t do is noodle. There are none of the meandering solos that can lead to a song dragging on past the point where they are no longer interesting. The songs- even the long ones- are tight, and Stillwood stays in control.
