To the uninitiated, blues might seem like a style mastered by old men. It may be surprising to learn that many of the blues legends, who became of age in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, mastered their craft and gained fame at a much younger age than we remember them today. Muddy Waters perfected the bottleneck guitar at age 18, his blues-mate Junior Wells began the harp at 12, and James Cotton began touring with his uncle, blues legend Sonny Boy Williamson at age 9.
In the image of these well-known blues musicians, Jamie Eubanks has been
wowing audiences with his guitar since he was 13 years old. During the past few years, he and his family would make the drive down from Thomasville, Georgia to the Bradfordville Blues Club, where he would perform with established bluesmen like Kenny Neal and Guitar Shorty. He has taken lessons with local guitar hero Missippy James and gained inspiration from another young guitar phenom, Rick Lollar. By the time he stepped foot into WFSU Studio A to record this episode of outloud, he was a 17 year old veteran with his own band.
His style is an electric blues with a heavy Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn influence. He is joined by his father Randy, on rhythm guitar, Darius “Doc D” Baker, on keys, David Collins, on bass, and Taurus Lovely, on drums. He credits his band with guiding his maturation as a musician. He no longer is just one of the best young guitar players in the area, he is one of the best, PERIOD.
As this show gets ready to premiere, Jamie is in his senior year of high school. He hopes to get a music scholarship to FSU and pursue music as a career. If all goes well, he will one day be an old bluesman; future fans who come across this footage will be surprised at just how young he was when he started.
