Stillwood has all the trappings of a jam band: music with elements of southern roots-rock and psychedelic pop, virtuoso instrumental solos leading to song lengths in excess of 7-8 minutes – and a reputation as a high-energy live band. But what they don’t do is noodle. There are none of the meandering solos that can lead to a song dragging on past the point where they are no longer interesting. The songs- even the long ones- are tight, and Stillwood stays in control.
The band originally started performing under the name Tanglewood, which just happens to be the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The Orchestra sued to have he name changed, and the band- whose southern fried funk keyboard, dual lead guitars, and sandpaper smooth lead vocals (did you mix them up with the BSO yet?)- decided to abandon the name rather than enter costly litigation.
The current name pays tribute to the fact that regardless, this is STILL the same band that has been tearing up stages since 2000. This long run is as much fueled by their music skills as it is by their close friendship. They appear on this episode of outloud without their regular keyboard player- T-byrd Taylor (who was at the time of the shoot on a state-paid sabbatical). He was definitely missed by his bandmates, who commemorated him with a photo on the set. His spot was admirably filled by Ryan Way, who didn’t miss a beat.
