Acclaimed pianist Christopher O’Riley is in Tallahassee this week for the Seven Days of Opening Nights festival. Tomorrow (Saturday) he’s set to play with the University Symphony Orchestra, and yesterday, he did a live taping of his public radio show From the Top, which provides pre-college age classical musicians an opportunity to perform. 88.9 FM’s Chris Hosken recently chatted with O’Riley about his very diverse repertoire.

Cobb Middle School teacher Jan Graham received the top honor for Leon County teachers this week – after being named the school district’s teacher of the year. After more than two decades in the classroom Graham says the recognition is like receiving the “Oscar Award” for teaching. 88.9FM’s Zach Seidenberg spoke with Graham about the honor and what it’s like being a teacher in today’s classroom.

Members of the Florida A & M University Marching 100 returned from California late last week after the groups performance at the 48th Grammy Awards on Wednesday. Looking back – Band Director, Julian White says it was an extremely momentous occasion for the band and the University. 88.9FM’s Zach Seidenberg spoke with White regarding the Grammy performance.

Tallahassee and Leon County Government leaders are gearing up for a year filled with local priorities, and many will include collaboration between the city and county. 88.9FM’s Zach Seidenberg spoke with Leon County Commission Chairman Bill Proctor and Tallahassee City Commissioner and Mayor Pro-Tem Mark Mustian about their 2006 agendas – and one issue both governments will be working closely to resolve is consolidation among a number of city/county services.

Disabled Voting Deadline Missed

Leon County Elections Supervisor Ion Sancho says his outspoken advocacy for election reforms may have led to the county’s failure to comply with federal standards for disabled voters. The failure to meet the deadline may cost Leon County more than half a million dollars under the Help America Vote Act. However, Sancho argues voting technology companies refused to provide Leon County with the necessary software, possibly in an attempt to enact payback on the elections administrator for criticizing voting systems.

What's the phrase? I don't belong to any organized party, I'm a Democrat. It's appropriate for last nights first meeting of the Leon County Democratic Party presided over by newly elected leader Rick Minor. Minor asked members to avoid fighting amongst themselves and focus on the work ahead. Bringing together the various factions of the local party could prove to be a long term challenge.
