The Sounds of Swing
Saturdays 6 - 10 pm ET
91.5-FM WFSQ
In 1978, Jim Chion contacted The Public Radio Center with his idea for a jazz program called Sounds of Swing. Proving to be knowledgeable about both jazz and broadcasting, Chion went on the air and within the first year his ratings tripled and the program still has a large following. Sounds of Swing was the first live show to air from the new studios in the FSU Broadcast Center in 1983. Soon thereafter, Chion welcomed the Sugar Foot Stompers for the first live music performance in the new studios. In preparation for each week's program, Chion spends at least an hour or two every night listening to music on original 78s that have not been reissued on LP. He refurbishes and equalizes them, creating a master tape for broadcast on the now four hour long Sounds of Swing. With a collection of 4,000 LPs and 78s and 400 CDs, he continues to seek out old recordings from garage sales, auctions and other collectors.
