FSU Alternative Break Corps Students Volunteer in West Virginia During Spring Break.
This WFSU-TV-produced documentary puts a twist on the question “What did you do on your Spring Break?” For six college students, their answer may be different from what you would imagine.
A Different Kind of Break: ABC to WVA illustrates how six typical Florida State University students have a very atypical Spring Break experience volunteering in a rural coal mining community in West Virginia. They brought back video exhibiting what happens when the beach is not part of the Spring Break equation: hard work and education are valued and an element of youthful exuberance is visible throughout their adventures.
However, before they even have a chance to
come together, they must deal with a
crisis that threatens to rip them apart. Over the course of the
week they become stuck (with no working
communication equipment) in the snow on a mountain road and take a risky drive through flood
waters. And as if not strained enough, the group must learn to work within a community very
different from their own - leading them to discover unexpected things about themselves and each
other. It's an adventure that will change their
lives forever.
