2008 BIG BEND REGIONAL SPELLING BEE
12 Area Students Will Compete

Tallahassee, FL -- The Tallahassee Democrat will host the annual Big Bend Regional Spelling Bee on February 16 th at 1:00 p.m at WFSU.  Students from 11 schools in North Florida and South Georgia will compete to advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.

The community is invited to be a part of the live studio audience for the Regional Spelling Bee.  It will be held at the WFSU-TV studio at 1600 Red Barber Plaza (directions/map), and will be televised on WFSU for the first time at 6:00 pm ET.

The 12 participants are elementary and middle school students who won their school district spelling bee.  They will compete for prizes and the Tallahassee Democrat will pay for the winner to attend the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee from May 25th to May 31st. 

The 2008 Big Bend Regional Spelling Bee participants are:

Franklin County:  Jesse Cameron of Franklin County "West" Campus, 6th grade
Gadsden County:  Gregory Johnson, II of Havana Middle School, 7th grade
Gilchrist County:  Wyatt Bowden of Trenton Middle/High School, 7th grade

Grady County:  Austin Brinkley of Shiver Elementary, 8th grade
Jackson County:  Cole Richards of Graceville High School, 8th grade
Jefferson County:  Aimee Love of Aucilla Christian Academy, 6th grade
Leon County:  Diego Hernandez of Fairview Middle School - Pre IB Program, 7th grade
Levy County:  Jeremiah "JJ" Roe of Bronson Middle/High School, 7th grade
Levy County:  Justin Ivey of Chiefland Middle School, 6th grade
Taylor County:  Essence Scruggs of The Scholars' Academy, 7th grade
Wakulla County:  Randell Mainer of Riversprings Middle School, 7th grade
