Fire in the Longleaf Forest | Roaming the Red Hills

In the 1880s, northerners became enamored with hunting quail in the Red Hills region, which encompasses Thomasville in Georgia and Tallahassee and Monticello in Florida. Prescribed fire opened up habitat for quail in the longleaf forest, and benefitted other species as well. We go on a quail hunt, band endangered red cockaded woodpeckers, and peak into gopher tortoise burrows.
